ARCHIVA
Archiva - The name for expert copying and restoration of old photographs

I think I could be the only photographer in the UK still capable of producing the final image of your picture on to a real archive photographic paper - to compare with and last as long as your original!

The film negative I first make of your work is supplied with the finished print, so you can call up more prints whenever you want*. When necessary I will use the same sepia toning methods as the Victorian photographers giving a genuine classic look to your new prints.

Definitely not a cheap corner shop service, but with each order treated individually and by using professional materials and methods, I can guarantee you the best possible results.

I'm given really precious images that have not been looked after, kept in wallets or purses, sometimes even in the attic, where they've been gradually deteriorating even been nibbled by hungry mice! And then a member of the family realises that this image is of great value to their generation and wants it restored in the best way possible.

These old photos were printed on the sort of photographic paper which is no longer in great use, as the advent of computers and printers has now changed the whole method of producing images.

Despite what manufacturer's claim, a traditionally produced photographic print is still ahead of prints made by modern printers. One of the reasons why these old prints have lasted, is because of the material they've been printed on. The black/white and sepia material I use belongs to the same family as these early prints – it has to be exposed by a photographic enlarger, hand processed and then washed and dried carefully.

But it looks and feels genuine, and will last for another century if reasonable care is taken with it – rather different to most home produced computer prints.

Here are a few samples of the sort of work I get involved in.

*When a colour print is restored, your final result will still be printed using genuine photographic paper and your image will be stored on a supplied CD not a negative.
